Football Update: Rafael Benitez sacked by Inter Milan
It has been confirmed by Inter Milan that they have sacked manager Rafael Benitez. This puts an end to days of speculation regarding the Spaniards future at the club. Inter President Massimo Moratti, and Benitez himself, had continually denied reports that
the Club has released their manager. However, today, after days of guesswork in the media, Moratti confirmed that Benitez’s term at Inter has come to an end.
A statement on the club’s website said, “Inter Milan and Rafael Benitez can announce that they have reached a mutually satisfactory agreement for the early termination of his contract. Inter thank Rafael Benitez for his work in leading his team to success
in the Italian Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup."
Benitez managed only a 6 months stay with Inter, after he was brought in as a replacement for Jose Mourinho. Under Mourinho, last season, the Italian giants won an astounding treble of Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia titles. Benitez was never
able to live up to such high standards and failed to gain support of the fans. Inter currently stand 7th on the Serie A table with only 6 wins in 15 games.
On his removal Benitez said, “I want to thank everyone for the support received during my experience at Inter. The two titles we won were the result of the commitment of all those who have been on our side. Finally, it is incumbent on my part to thank
President Massimo Moratti for choosing me as coach.”
In his short reign at the club, Benitez won two titles with the team. The Italian Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup, but was never able to produce a strong performance in the Champions League and Serie A. After his ultimatum, of complete support, following
the Club World Cup win, his relations with Moratti further deteriorated, eventually leading to his dismissal.
