Football Update: Red Bulls New Selection- Corey Hertzog and John Rooney
The New York Red Bulls, after a thorough discussion with the management about the need of a centre back and a right back, surprised everyone when they picked a forward and a midfielder as their first picks in the 2011 SuperDraft.
The first pick of the New York Red Bulls was the Penn State striker Corey Hertzog. Hertzog led the tables of the Big Ten Men’s Soccer in 2009 and sat atop the NCAA chart with 20 goals.
Many people were surprised when Red Bulls selected strikers instead of defenders as their first picks. But the selection of the 21-year-old Pennsylvania native seemed to be very exciting to the head coach Hans Backe and the sporting director Erik Soler.
“He had solid three games at the Combine,” Backe said. “He played wide and he also played as a striker."
As for Hertzog, who met the coach and the director for the first time on Thursday, the player was very excited to join the Red Bulls. Thinking about the team, it ultimately dawned on the former college star that he will be playing with some of the best players
in the game.
“All my friends at home are like, 'What if you go to New York and had the chance to play with Thierry Henry?'” Hertzog said.

the ball into the goal post 51 times in 123 appearances.
The next candidate who was selected by the management of the Red Bulls came as little surprise too as it was not a right back again. Backe and Solar’s next choice was English midfielder John Rooney. John Rooney is the younger brother of English star Wayne
Rooney. John has had England’s lower leagues experience. Backe was a little surprised that John was not selected in the first round.
Rooney has high hopes in the endeavour as he called himself a goal-scoring midfielder. His family also cheered for him at the selection as they were also attending the draft. Rooney also met the management on the day of the selection. He is looking forward
to making a lasting impact at the Red Bulls Arena.
The next second round pick for the Red Bulls was Tyler Lassiter, North Carolina State defender. The third round selection was defender Billy Cortes.
