Football Update: Sir Alex Ferguson vary of Sunderland's threat
After two consecutive matches called off due to adverse weather conditions Manchester United will hope to continue their impressive run of form against Sunderland when they host the black cats at the Theatre of dreams on Boxing day.
Ahead of the match, Sir Alex has warned his team that they will have to be at their best if they are to beat a Sunderland side that has been extremely impressive in their last couple of outings.
Last time out against Sunderland in the league this year, Sir Alex’s troops fired blank as they drew 0-0 with the Black Cats.
Sunderland on the other hand are chasing a European dream as a recent run of impressive performances has seen them in the top half of the table and challenging for a position in the Europa League.
This year Sunderland have already achieved victory against Manchester City and collected respectable draws against Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United.
Sir Alex Ferguson has already said that the game against Sunderland earlier in the season was his side’s hardest game of the season and he was happy that his side came away with a point.
But Sir Alex has side that apart from all the good results that Sunderland has achieved this season their performance against Chelsea in the 3-0 win was their best performance of the season.
Sir Alex said that Sunderland’s performance against the defending Champions was a perfect performance and in all his time at the helm of Manchester United he could only remember five or six perfect performances and Sunderland’s against Chelsea was one of
those.
It is one of Sir Alex’s own man who is causing all the damage for Sunderland. Danny Wellbeck is a Manchester United player who is on loan at the Stadium of light till the end of the season and Ferguson is very happy that the striker has established himself
in the squad in the presence of accomplished strikers like Asamoah Gyan and Darren Bent.
Wellbeck has already scored 4 goals after he broke his duck against Chelsea at the Stamford Bridge and according to the terms of the transfer deal between the two clubs, Danny Wellbeck is ineligible to play against his parent club on Sunday.
His absence will be a setback for Steve Bruce’s team but with Darren Bent and Asamoah Gyan in the squad he has ample back up for Wellbeck.
Ferguson feels that it was very important for Danny to go out on loan and hone his skills by playing some regular football.
Sir Alex said that during his time at Old Trafford Danny never started or played for United in more than 4 consecutive games but since his loan move to Sunderland he has established himself in the team and has become an integral part of Steve Bruce’s attack.
Considering all the things Sir Alex will be quite pleased that Danny Wellbeck will only be confined to the stands at Old Trafford on Sunday.
In the pre match press briefing Sir Alex also confirmed that the clock is ticking down on Edvin van der Sar’s glittering football career and the United boss needs to address the issue sooner rather than later.
Sir Alex has already signed Anders Lindergaard and he will be available for selection after United’s game against stoke on the 4th of January and if the need be Sir Alex can give the 20 year old his debut in the FA Cup game against Liverpool on
the 9th of January.
United have only lost one game this season, against West Ham in the Carling Cup and if they can win the weekend game over Sunderland, they will extend their lead at the top of the table to two points with a game in hand.
