Football Update: Some of the big winners from the weekend in the Premier League
It was another exciting weekend of English football that saw Chelsea maintain their imperious form in the league by beating Arsenal 2-0 on Sunday. While Liverpool plunged to new depths as they lost at Anfield to newly promoted Blackpool.
Here is the list of some of the biggest winners of the weekend.
Chelsea
Perhaps it was a minor hiccup when Chelsea lost to Man City a week ago but their superiority was clear to all and sundry on Sunday as they produced another belligerent performance to see off Arsenal. After their latest win, Chelsea’s record against the Premier
League big four stands at 8 wins out of 8, something extraordinarily phenomenal! It will take some doing by their rivals if they are to be denied their 2nd EPL title in as many years.
Didier Drogba
Drogba is one of the most feared strikers in the world of football today, as such is his form for his club that he has now scored or provided the assist for the last 30 goals that the Blues have scored. His form against Arsenal is even better.
He has played 13 games against Wenger’s men and has scored 13 goals. His latest was the deadlock breaker on Sunday.
Tottenham Hotspurs
The victory against Aston Villa On Saturday was of extremely high significance for Spurs, as it came under circumstances that were extraordinary. Spurs centre back pairing of Sebastian Bassong and Huddlestone was their tenth combination tried at the heart
of defence in their last 12 matches.
Still they came good against the challenge posed by Aston Villa and its credit to Spurs for notching up an important win.
Rafael van der Vaart
It was another performance of note by the Dutchman in Tottenham colours, as he helped his side notch up an impressive win against Aston Villa.
Van der Vaart has been pivotal for Spurs this season and for a mere 8 million pounds, he is perhaps the best signing of the summer. He has already scored some precious goals for Spurs and given some impressive performances but his latest outing was perhaps
the best of his short career at White Hart Lane.
Blackpool
It will be nothing short of a fairy tale if Blackpool manager to keep their Premier League status intact at the end of the season but by the looks of it the dream may become a reality. So far the Seasiders have played five away matches, 3 of those came were
at the modern-era citadels of the Premier League, and yet they are above Everton and Liverpool in the Premier League.
Their latest win against Liverpool was perhaps their best performance of the season.
Titus Bramble
Titus is one man in the Premier League who has seen a meteoric rise in his reputation since his switch from Wigan to West Ham. The mere fact that he is keeping Anton Ferdinand out of manager’s favour is a glaring testament to his impressive performances.
Sunderland
Sunderland are becoming a force to reckon with in the Premier League. Three successive draws against Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal are a proof of their impressive form in the League.
Everton
Everton started the weekend in the drop zone, the only way to go for Moyes’s side was to go up, and they certainly did that as they notched up their first Premier League win of the season. Everton are a very decent side and can still be contenders for the Champions
League and they did no harm to their continental aspirations with the win.
However, the imminent danger to this aspiration will come from their Merseysides rivals Liverpool, who they face next weekend in the Merseyside derby.
Moyes’s side will be buoyant and in confident mood ahead of the fiery encounter at Goodisson Park, as their rivals are not in the best of form and are languishing in the relegation zone themselves.
