Football Update: Spanish La Liga Tuesday review
Real Madrid made a strong statement in the Premiera Liga after a resounding 3-0 win over Espanyol in midweek action. The most expensive player in the world Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring just before the half hour mark, followed by Argentine Gonzalo
Higuain’s goal that made it 2 and the misfiring Frenchman Karim Benzima sealed the match with a third 3 minutes from time.
Real Madrid have now gone top of the table leapfrogging Valencia by one point, Valencia play on Wednesday and can reclaim the top spot with a win.
The match was fiercely contested and was full of incidents; neither of the teams finished the match with 11 players. Pepe the Portuguese defender for Real Madrid was the first to be sent off with half an hour of the game left to play. Espanyol had not one
but 2 players given marching orders, first it was Ernesto Galan who was given a red just 3 minutes after Pepe and Juan Forlin had almost made it to the full 90 minute mark but could not contain himself and was sent off with one minute of play remaining.
Jose Mourinho, the manager for Real said he was satisfied with the result considering the circumstances. The special one said that the playing surface was not ideal and, the schedule of the league meant that there was hardly any time for his team to prepare.
So over all it was a good result.
"I am satisfied given the circumstances because it isn't easy to play on a potato field, it isn't easy to play a third game having had only two days to recover, and it isn't easy to face an opponent that had nothing to lose," he said.
The former Chelsea manager said that his team could have won more easily had they taken the chances in the 2nd half. Jose said that getting on top of the table was great but would have to wait and watch what happens in the Valencia game to see
if they still remain at the top.
"We'll see if we are still at the top tomorrow night after Valencia's game. We had more chances to score in the second half and grew calmer. This team still needs to improve, but above all it needs to rest."
"I prefer to talk about referees when they do a good job," Mourinho said.
The special one was not impressed by the display from match official, with 3 red cards in the match. Jose said that in an earlier match, he had complimented the referee but this time he would not want to comment.
"I talked about the ref in San Sebastian because it was a pleasure to see such a good performance. I'd rather not comment on the ref today.”
"His decision didn't really influence the score, which is what matters and what we all ultimately want."
Real play Levante at the weekend.
Meanwhile, Osasuna got their first points of the season, they had not been able to score a single goal in the first 3 games and did not manage a single point.  Osasuna had a much better outing and ended up winning the match 3-1 against the newly-promoted
Real Sociedad.
Real Sociedad was the first team to score through Raul Tamudo, and the home fans would have feared another disappointing show from Osassuna. However, the fans got behind their side and just 5 minutes before the break, they got 2 goals. Walter Pandiani and
Javier Camunas were both on the score sheet as they broke the duck for the season for Osasuna.
In another match, David Lopez got rub of the green as a fluke goal from him opened the scoring for Athletic Bilbao. Bilbao went on to dominate the match from then on and ended up winning the match 3-0 against Real Mallorca.
Lopez was looking to cross the ball from the right flank using his left foot, due to the wet surface he slipped and the ball instead of going towards the centre of the box headed directly towards the goal and with good amount of curl on it ended up in the
back of the net at the far post.
In the 2nd, half strikes from Mikel San Jose and Inigo Perez made it 3-0 and completed a comfortable win.
