Hi, I just read in the papers that Arsenal pocketed £7m from Tottenham after they signed Bentley. Apparently, Arsene added a sell-on clause. Could someone please THOROUGHLY explain what a sell-on and a buy-on clause does . If anything, could you also add on the source of where you got the answer from, even if it was your brain!!

  1. the reason why you have a player in the first place is because you rate them, now you mightened be exactly excited about the prospect of selling a player that you think will be great in a couple of seasons.

so some managers get a sell-on policy that ensures they haven't just sold a player for too little when next season his price has tripled, some other clauses are if the player gets an international cap you have to make a payment or if he plays more than 20 games for the club etc. its like anything if you want something you might lie to the seller to get the price down, but you know different, so the seller protects himself.

  2. A sell on clause is an addition to the terms of sale of a player in which the current owner of the player, in this case Arsenal, would earn money from the NEXT sale of the player. Bentley moves to Blackburn, so Arsenal get the orginal fee. He then moves to Spurs. Arsenal then recieve a percentage of the fee that Tottenham paid for Bentley. The percentage in the clause would have been agreed at the time of the original sale.

    Hope that helps!

  3. buy on clause is where you put a price on the player that you selling and thats how much you can but them back for for example

sunderland had a 2 million buy on clause for arca which meant that even if middlesborough never wanted to sell him sunderland could put the bid in and if he wanted to come back he could

and a sell on clause is where you get so much percent of the next sell of him
