Football and s*x: Man City manager tells his players to womanise instead of getting drunk
Premier League players have not had the greatest record of late with s*x and their private lives. The recent stories of Wayne Rooney, Peter Crouch and John Terry have put a black mark on each of these footballers’ careers. Recently the manager of Manchester
City stated that he would rather have his players go out and womanise and have s*x before a game than drink themselves into a stupor. Even though his comments are controversial, there has been a long standing debate about the effects of s*x on a football player’s
body in regards to their ability to perform on the field the next day.
In the past few months, the top football players in the Premier League have been embroiled in scandals. John Terry got himself into some serious trouble and managed to lose the England captaincy after it was alleged that he had an affair with the ex-partner
of a teammate. Peter Crouch also faced a brutal public reaction when he was found to have had one night stand in Madrid with a woman while his fiancée was pregnant with the couple’s child. Wayne Rooney had it very tough as well recently when allegations swirled
around the media that he had had an affair with a prostitute and it has really messed with his playing abilities and might end his marriage as well. So, as such, footballers are not the best role models when it comes to fidelity in their marriages.
In light of these examples and numerous others over the years, the comments made recently by the Man City manager, Roberto Mancini, did not go down too well. He said that he preferred that his players womanised and had s*x rather than drink so much that
they got drunk the night before a game. His comments were in very poor taste but it seems his point was that he was referring to the drinking culture that abounds in the UK where almost every player would go for a pint after training or before a game and he
felt it impacted negatively on their performance the next day. He was not talking about the fact that he wanted his players to go out and have sexual affairs with women before a game but that he preferred one over the other.
This brings us to an interesting point; does having s*x the night before a game or getting drunk have a large impact on performance. In the matter of getting drunk, the after effects of heavy drinking are feeling ill the next day and usually a hangover.
This may affect a player’s performance during a game because he will not be in top physical or mental condition to play, but more research into this needs to be done.
On the other hand, does having s*x the night before a game affect performance? Well, some athletes swear that it does and they absolutely abstain from it before a big game. Others say it makes no difference and they enjoy healthy s*x before a match with
no adverse effects. Research conducted in 2004 by Dr Ian Shrirer, formerly of the Canadian Academy of Sports Medicine, found that it can help some people while harming others. The research found that very aggressive football players would positively benefit
from s*x the night before as it would bring down their aggression and allow them to think clearly and play better football. But for those people who were not that aggressive to begin with it might harm them by lowering their aggression levels even more and
leaving them physically drained the next day.
It seems more research needs to be conducted into whether having s*x actually enhances or harms a player’s abilities during a match. We will have to wait and see whether the Man City players actually take on Mancini’s advice and give up the boozing for some
womanising instead. This will probably not be too readily accepted by the media and tabloids as getting drunk is not that bad in their eyes but cheating on pregnant partners is a pretty rotten thing to do. So maybe, less drinking and less womanising might
make more sense.
