The European Police Office, Europol, today announced that it has dismantled a criminal network that was responsible for faking 380 football games, including games during the World Cup and the Champions League
Today, world of football is facing a huge scandal, a scandal that could change the face of the most popular game in the Old Continent. The European Police agency, the Europol, today announced that it has managed to dismantle a criminal organisation that
was heavily suspected of faking around 380 games which included World Cup playoff matches and UEFA Champions League games.
While talking during a press conference in Hague, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Netherlands-c753, Europol director, Rob Wainwright said that his organisation has never before seen such a huge scale match fixing activity and revealed that this has been the work of organised criminal syndicates
in Asia that are operating with criminal organisations in Europe.
“This is the work of a suspected organised crime syndicate based in Asia and operated with criminal networks around Europe. It is clear to us this is the biggest ever investigation into suspected match fixing in Europe.”
The director then went on to say that the search has led his team to uncover a huge problem that has tainted the integrity of the sport in Europe.
According the investigation, the team has managed to uncover eight million Euros in betting profits and two million euros on bribes to players and officials. Already, many suspects have been led to several prosecutions and it is expected that the investigation
will linger on as long as the prime suspects are not reprimanded. Although Europol has chosen not to talk about the methods, they have revealed that around 425 people which include referees, club presidents and players are currently under scrutiny for their
work and also said that an open telephone line has been established in order to gain further evidence about other match fixing events which could further shake the world of football.
Indeed, this is a surprising news for all those people who love the beautiful game but in order to maintain the sanctity of the game, it would be better to reprimand the culprits.
