Football is a manager's game - An off the field look on clubs' dependency on managers
Football is a manager’s game. It always has been. Well, at least since the advent of the new English Premier League.
It is without a doubt that Sir http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alex-c4752 Ferguson has a greater right to stake a claim at the cup than Manchester United. Similarly, Arsene Wenger lost it for Arsenal.
The managers plan, strategize and curtail the outside pressure. They are the healers for their men.
A look at how Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea faired in the just concluded English Premier League and we can easily make out the game is much more than the makeup of the squad. All of the mentioned teams have great line-up of players.
The game is much more than finishing at the top spot.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 have probably been the biggest disappointment of the season 2010/11. Wenger lost it for them in many ways than one to suggest the role a manager truly holds. Wenger did not make any purchase in the short transfer window during January. There was
a hue and cry from the fans and critics alike to bolster the team that had been in the running for the Premier League title for almost until the end of the season. Also, Wenger completely failed to pick up the side that had lost the Carling Cup final. That
defeat haunted the Gunners for the remainder of the Premier League.
Similarly, Ian Holloway, the manager that brought Blackpool to the top flight for the very first time, crashed and burnt too soon. He was a little too aggressive and not tactical enough. He ended up being a fallen idol. Holloway had done everything right
for twelve months right until the last six months of the Premier League. The climb quickly pivoted in to a nose dive as Blackpool suffered a last minute defeat at the hands of Aston Villa. They had conceded 26 goals in 12 Premier League matches and Holloway
was not proactive enough to resolve the issues.
It might be unfair to put all the blame on Ancelotti for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786’s sufferings. But when he lost his assistant manager, Ray Wilkins, he was required to act and be just as vocal as he normally is during any heated match. Losing Ray Wilkins so timidly meant
losing his dressing room and ultimately his position with the club. Chelsea ended where they did partly due to inefficiencies of Arsenal, or should we say Arsene Wenger.
Unlike Blackpool, that was all attacking, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Carlos-c8346 Tevez, Mario Ballotelli, Edin Dzeko, James
Milner and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Silva-c10601. These attacking players could do little to excite the viewers. They were as boring as Mancini with his ultra-defensive tactics.
In another part of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 fans must have become very optimistic of their chances when Kenny Dalglish was hired as the team’s manager. There is nothing more to write about Anfield. We all know how their campaign transpired. It was dull. So is
the idea of writing about it.
Rafa Benitez’s story with the treble trophy holders of 2009/10 campaign is quite similar as well. The winning combination of the squad and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/José-c19246 Mourinho was broken and along with all hopes of defending any of the titles. The new management just could not
repeat any of the recent glory. Simply put, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 had different management, tactics and ideas. Sadly, for them, none clicked.
In comparison, Ferguson showed how to turn a relatively average team in to double-trophy holders. Under him Manchester United were motivated and organised professionally. The results are a solid proof.
Arsene Wenger, Ancelotti and Kenny Dalglish can surely take a leaf out of Fergie’s book and possibly try to turn out their team’s fortunes (read misfortunes).
