  1. It is 2 completely different games with completely different kinds of violence.

If you took some of these squirlly little rugby players and put them against NFL players in a game of football, some of them would get killed.

And if you took oversized NFL players they would never have the stamina to play rugby.

We all played rugby styled games in our backyards and in the quads in college. No big deal. Why cant people just respect both sports and see both are tough.

  2. american football is for fat g*y american men. The people who play that are nothing more than drugged up fatties hiding under pads.

Meanwhile Rugby is about strength, stamina and skill. american football players would die from cardiac arrest because they can't last for more than 10 minutes in a Rugby match.

  3. BOOOOOO YAAAAAAAAAA

You're dang right!!!  As long as you're talking about soccer not American, Canadian or Australian Football.  They are all pretty tough nuts that play those.  Soccer is full of girly men!  They could take a lesson in toughness from the women soccer players.

  4. Football is a gentleman's sport played by thugs, &

Rugby is a thug's sport played by gentlemen.....

    ....in the professional era....

  5. Football requires skill and training. There are actually plays that are run. Rugby is nothing more than kill the man with the ball that we played when we were kids. Not wearing pads and a helmet when playing such a rough sport is a sign of ignorance and has no longevity. But... to each his own.

  6. American football and rugby (union) are both great games.  I played over a decade of rugby (center) in Australia and the USA, and four years of college football in the USA (running back).  As far as toughness goes, the law of nature applies:  In both rugby and football, both teams dish it out to the limit of human endurance.

To those rugby players who scoff at the pads and helmets, it just allows you to up the impact until it hurts just as much.  If you tackle in rugby (without protective equipment) the way you do in football, half the team would be carted off on stretchers in the first 15 minutes.  Go ahead, try tackling full speed head-on with your face, or put your head in front of the runner's legs and get it ground between the grass and his knees.

I tended to lose a little more skin and blood in a rugby game, but got more consistently bruised and beat up wherever there are nerve endings in a football game.

Other than that, the games are different, have different things to love about them, and nothing about either not to love.

Let's stop this silliness about which sport is the more manly (and note that the scariest group of people you'll ever see in one place is a women's rugby team).  Retain your disdain for golfers and such.

One final note:  American football coaching is a fine art, and very effective.  American rugby coaching is appalling.  Top American teams get creamed by other colonials all the time because they lack simple disciplines that we learned when we were 13, like angling the back line on offense and coming up evenly on defense.

If American rugby were coached with the same method and discipline as American football, then American rugby teams would become a force to contend with.

  7. This is a common comment passed by those who have never played football (soccer to some). I have played rugby and football in my time. Both are physically demanding but in different ways. Football is supposedly a non contact sport but tell that to a knuckle dragging central defender whose only aim in life is to remove your legs below the kneecaps :-)

  8. The training and intensity of the game is the same the celebrations when scoring is totaly different rugby men pat each other on the back a football player lies on top of eachothers back

  9. football is not for girly men! i play street rughby and street football
