Football news: Dimitar Berbatov admits his price tag is a curse for his performances (Part 1)
Manchester United in form striker, Dimitar Berbatov has confessed that his 30.75 million pound price tag has been the major factor behind his dip in form over the past two seasons.
Berbatov spent the past two seasons as more of an assist-maker rather than being a goal-scorer, which led to mix reactions from the fans and critics around him. Yet, manager Sir Alex Ferguson always praised the player’s ability and backed him to shine the
brightest sooner than later. The price now seems to be paying dividends as Berbatov has been in solid form this season, having already scored 7 goals in six matches. His remarkable hat-trick against Liverpool on the weekend was enough to establish himself
as a fan favourite, who are now singing praises about the 29-year-old Bulgarian. The manager always labelled Berba as a genius and his ball control, and class was shown every time he had the ball at his feet. Berbatov, however, was not what United fans wanted
a player of his price tag to be. The Bulgarian was more of a player who needs time and space on the ball, which obviously is the last thing available in the Premier League.
The Red Devils faithful, thus, started labelling the Bulgarian as too lazy and not a healthy contributor to the team, which thrives on pace and energy. Many expected the then 30.75 million pound to be sold off to some other club, perhaps to the Italian league,
which do provide the Bulgarian with the much needed time and space. AC Milan were potential buyers of the unsettled forward, but Sir Alex Ferguson showed his trust in his signing. That faith and trust by the manager paid off this season as Berbatov, from the
pre-season, showed no signs of slowing down and has thus scored in every Premier League match he has played. The player currently tops the Premier League scoring charts with 7 goals in 6 appearances so far. Berba’s match-winning and inspiring hat-trick against
Liverpool was a first by a Man United player against Liverpool in nearly 64 years. Berbatov’s second goal, which came off from an overhead kick could easily be labelled as the goal of the season and fans have started respecting the 29- year-old’s presence
in the game.
For the Bulgarian, it would finally be the day he gets rid of his shackles and finally breathe a sigh of relief. The player labelled the match to be the best day in a Red Shirt and thanked his teammates and manager for the support and faith. The classy striker
is a quiet, thoughtful individual who would love nothing else than a family life.
In his exclusive interview with the media, however, the Bulgarian finally revealed bits and hints about his life and what he is beyond the Red Shirt.
"I suppose I am a strange guy but I am shy and maybe some people don't realise that. I have a difficulty letting someone else into my inner circle. I tried not to think about it (the fee) but sometimes you just can't help it. You start thinking, 'That's
a lot of money, what is going to happen if I don't prove good enough or I don't score enough goals?'. It was always going through my mind and sometimes it can be bad for your concentration and your skills because it distracts you from the main goal”, claimed
the Bulgarian hitman.
