Football news – Mourinho scrutinizes Capello’s failed strategies
In a recent interview with the press, Jose Mourinho has been discussing English National team problems. During the interview, he blamed English coach, Fabio Capello for the problems faced by the team.
Jose Mourinho lashed out at Capello, as he said that the Italian uses fear on his players, due to which the team remains in a state of confusion. He said that Capello is England’s worst enemy as they would never be able to win under him.
Mourinho remained at England for three years, managing the London side, Chelsea. During his stay, he remained the coach of some English players, including John Terry, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole. Due to his unique managerial techniques, Mourinho builds up a natural understanding with his players. Therefore, he believes that English players have the ability, but they are let down by their manager, Fabio Capello.
Criticizing the attitude of Capello, Mourinho said that his players are frightened because of his excessive shouting. He said that the manager should have a two-way relationship with players, based on mutual respect and understanding. During the interview, Mourinho blamed Capello’s tactics as well. He said that the manager is confused about things, due to which his players fail to meet their targets. Due to this confusion and fear in the squad, the English team has failed to perform well in the world cup.
On the other hand, the English captain, Rio Ferdinand, has come out in praise of his manager. Ferdinand missed the World Cup, because of an injury, so he was in a better position to give his objective view on his team’s performance. Ferdinand said that English played miserably, with no fault of the manager. He believed that everything was going fine for English team, so the failure in South Africa should not be blamed on Capello alone.
Ferdinand also pointed out that their dream run during the qualifying round resulted in a lot of praises for Capello, while after the world cup everyone turned their backs on the manager. He said that there is still some work needed to be done, while Capello would have to make some more changes to the team as well.
Fabio Capello actually came to England with promises to bring out drastic changes in the squad. For that purpose, Capello decided to introduce some youngsters in the squad. The same strategy was adopted by Germans for the world cup, due to which they won enormous success. Capello, on the contrary, trusted his old players, which resulted in another poor show by the English.
Apart from that, Capello is trying to bring Paul Scholes back from retirement. Although, he might not be able to play the next Euro Cup, however he might prove instrumental in the qualifying stages.
Jose Mourinho was right in the sense that Capello did not have clear tactics during the matches in South Africa. It was obvious from his game plans that English were not prepared well for their fixtures. This might be due to over-confidence, as the team was enjoying a lot of success after a very long time. However, Mourinho just likes to remain in limelight, due to which he loves the media. So, he made some exaggeration in his remarks, as he made Capello look like a total bad guy. Capello has achieved a lot during his career, while he remained the manager of Real Madrid as well.
Capello is not a bad manager, but he finds himself in tough circumstances. Mourinho should keep in mind that England failed to qualify for Euro 2008. Therefore, in comparison to the past, English were quite successful, because of Capello. The real problem lays with the English team, with many highly-paid world class players. The problems arise when the players fail to come to terms with each other.
In Capello’s defence, it would not be hard to say that England is a team of world class individuals, while the manager has been partially successful in forming a unit. He needs a little more time, before he can really turn England into a world beating side.
