Football news: Real Madrid reignite their interest in Giorgio Chiellini
If the reports in the Italian Media are to be believed, Real Madrid has reignited their interest in Juventus central defender Giorgio Chiellini. Real Madrid’s interest in the defender is nothing new. Madrid has tried to acquire the services of the former
Fiorentina defender in the past only to see their efforts rebuffed. Chiellini made his talent known globally with a coming of age performances for Azzurri at EURO 2008. The Italian international was able to keep the likes of David Villa and Fernando Torres
for the entire duration of the match.
Giorgio Chiellini has been a perpetual presence in the heart of Old Lady Defence ever since the club got relegated to Serie B following the 2006 Calciopoli scandal. Juventus had a legendary centre back pairing of Lilian Thuram and Fabio Cannavaro at that
time. The relegation was too much to handle for the pair, as they decided to leave for pastures new. Thuram left for Barcelona while the World cup winning Italia skipper was immediately snapped up by Real Madrid.
According to the reports in the media, Chiellini was upset about the lack of recognition from the club and was willing to leave until recently. The club for their part has quickly opened contract negotiations to renew the defenders contract. Chiellini has
been the best defender in a Bianconeri jersey this season. Also, Juventus has a very shaky backline without the leadership of Chiellini. The club boasting of Scudetto ambitions will not dare sell their best defender.
Another factor that will rule out a potential sale of the defender is his status with the Bianconeri faithful. The defender is a firm fan favourite, so much so that he is nick named Il Capitano Futuro, meaning the future captain. Juventus hierarchy will
face a possible revolt if such a transfer takes place.
Giorgio Chiellini for his part is reportedly happy with the effort put in by Bianconeri to retain him. The defender is now set to snub the interest shown by the Santiago Bernabeau hierarchy. Real Madrid have been in search for a top-class centre back for
the past couple of years but Chiellini’s most recent snub will mean the club will have to look in other places to fulfil their ambitions.
