Football news: Roy Hodgson confident of Liverpool’s fate
In a recent interview given to a website, Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has shown his delight at the proposed takeover of the club by New England Sports Ventures. Liverpool FC club chairman Martin Broughton announced a prospective deal with a 17-man consortium
led by John W. Henry.
“Of course I am delighted, it is indeed a very positive piece of news. The board has worked hard on the deal and negotiations have been going on for some time now.”
New England Sports Ventures (NESV) has tabled a bid in the region of 300 million pounds but the current America owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett are not ready to let go of the club. The two have decided to take action against a potential deal. The case
is set to be presented before the High court next week. Hodgson is optimistic about the deal and hopes for a High Court ruling in the favour of the latest bid.
“The owners have some other ideas in their minds so it’s not going to be easy. However, I was delighted to hear about the latest developments and it looks like the deal will go through.”
Current club owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett bought the club in 2007 with much promise but the results since then have been truly disappointing. The club fans and ‘The Kop’ in particular, are very much against the current ownership and banners reading
“Thanks but no Yanks” can be seen unfurled in the Anfield stadium, whenever the club plays a home fixture.
Not everyone blames the American duo for the club’s downfall as Tottenham Hotspurs’ manager Harry Redknapp has come out in their defence. The manager believes that former coach, Rafa Benitez, is to be blamed for the club’s poor state. Redknapp believes Benitez’s
poor use of transfer funds is the primary reason the club is struggling so deeply this season. Expensive flops like Ryan Babel and Alberto Aquilani have cost the club a lot financially without adding quality on the pitch.
However, Rafa Benitez was given the sack earlier this summer but the club has failed to show any improvement. Major League Baseball outfit Boston Red Sox is doing well under the ownership of NESV and the Scousers will be hopeful the things will turn for
the best under the new leadership.
