Football news - Sir Alex Ferguson baffled by Arsene Wenger’s remarks
The Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson is confused by the remarks of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger about the 35-year-old midfielder Paul Scholes. The manager has openly defended his long-serving player, claiming he doesn’t know why the Arsenal boss said that.
The entire English nation is behind Scholes almost never aging abilities and expects him to re-join the English national side following his retirement in Euro 2004. The 35-year-old seems not ready to quit football, and has produced two man-of-the-match performances in three of United fixtures in the new season, including the FA Community Shield match held in early August.
Arsene Wenger while praising the midfielder’s ability, also added that there was also an evil side to the player that often saw him tread a very fine line between fair and foul. Sir Alex Ferguson has also accepted that sometimes Scholes’s tackles have been clumsy but has failed to understand why Arsene should add such remarks to the appreciation of Paul Scholes.
The manager claimed that he doesn’t know why Wenger said that. "When you are asked your opinion about someone with the ability and performance level of Paul Scholes I don't see why you should say that,” claimed Manchester United Manager. The manager added that it is very easy to look at the dark side of any particular player. Ferguson claimed that he could say the same about of the Arsenal’s players but there is no need of doing that. Manchester United manager went on stating that even though Scholes may not be the best of tacklers, he has never injured anyone in his long career. The manager added that one should have a more positive approach towards the player, over his strengths and abilities and his contribution to English football over 18-year career at United, which is simply magnificent.
The manager, however, claims that Scholes’s talent has been long gone from the English national side and may well never return after his retirement. The midfielder recently claimed that he regretted not going with England to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. This had led to many speculating that the player may well return to the England camp to face Bulgaria and Switzerland in the Euro 2012 qualifying.
Avram Grant, who is the West Ham United manager, is the new addition to the long list of people who have been trying to persuade Capello to add the midfielder, stating that had the player being 27 and possessing similar abilities makes the choice natural. One of the major reasons behind Scholes’s ability to still operate at the highest of levels is his frequent breaks he gets while his teammates are on international duty.
The manager went on claiming that a few year back, Scholes had persistent knee and eye injuries which made him miss half of the seasons but now he is fully fit and trains regularly. The manager added that when you’re in your thirty’s, things change and it is important to keep your fitness level the same all the time. The midfielder recently scored his 150 goal of his United career, owing to his long distance effort against Fulham. The manager added that the player’s lifestyle suits Manchester United, and if any player looks after himself, he can have a long career. The manager claimed that 10-15 year ago, he may never have thought that Scholes would have such a long career, considering he plays in the heart of midfield. The most vicious of tackles follow him but Scholes has maintained his health.
The manager claimed that the intensity of Manchester United has not changed as well as the Red Devils play every game as if it is the Cup final.
