Football news - Sir Alex Ferguson furious about throwing away 2 points
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was understandably disappointed and criticized his team for dropping what he termed silly points at Craven Cottage. Manchester United played out a 2-2 draw against Fulham in their 2nd Premier League match of the new season.
Manchester United competed in absence of their ace striker Wayne Rooney, as he was out because of a stomach virus. In his absence Nani stepped up in the 87th minute to take the penalty that would have given United a 3-1 lead. The Portuguese missed his chance to put his team 3-1 up, and instead Fulham scored at the other end making it 2-2.
After the match a furious Ferguson said that when a player gets such a golden opportunity to seal the match, it is criminal to miss it. He said that the penalty miss raised the morale of the opposition and with the crowd behind them they went and got the equalizer. Ferguson said that when the lucky own goal was awarded to us, he thought that his team had escaped a bad game. But when you miss a penalty at such a crucial juncture, it is just throwing away a chance to win all 3 points.
The Manchester United manager said that the Premier League has become so competitive that every single point matters in the end. Reflecting back to the last season, he said that we lost the title to Chelsea by just one point in the end and that is why no team can afford to slip up. Ferguson said that in the end probably a point is all his team deserved; he continued to show his disappointment and said that considering how the match started, his team should have won by a good margin. But Fulham did make a good comeback in the game and probably they did deserve a point from the game.
Manchester United dominated the early proceedings and when Scholes put them in the lead it looked as if it was going to be a landslide win.
Ferguson said that the way Fulham made its way back in the game was commendable. He said that the 2nd half certainly belonged to the home side. Ferguson added that when his team was 2-1 ahead he knew they did not deserve it but would have taken the win, however to throw it away is just unacceptable.
The Scotsman went on to say that Fulham’s attack did cause his team a lot of problems, and especially Bobby Zamora was very impressive. He said that in the end one can’t complain too much about the result.
When asked about the opening goal by Paul Scholes, Ferguson managed a little smile and said what can be said about Scholes. He said that he has been doing that for a decade and a half so it was no surprise. United Manager said that players like Scholes and Giggs are examples to young players about how to keep up the performance levels year after year.
The manager said that he does not understand why Giggs did not take the penalty; he added that even Nani could have done better had he been not so overconfident.
After the match Ferguson was once again asked about the absence of Wayne Rooney. He said that yes he had been suffering from a stomach bug and couldn’t make it due to this sole reason. He added though that Rooney should be back for the next game.
In the end Sir Alex Ferguson said that Chelsea have set the pace for the season with 12 goals in 2 games, and his team and others have to catch up soon.
