Football special: Will Liverpool kiss and make up with Torres?
Manchester United’s fans often sing, “He kisses the badge on his chest and hands in a transfer request, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Steven-Gerrard-c34196, Gerrard.” This terrace chant became famous back in year 2005, when reportedly, Steven Gerrard was on the verge of leaving his childhood
club Liverpool, after he handed in a transfer request to seek a move to greener pastures (read Chelsea). Later on, Gerrard withdrew his own request and confirmed that his allegiances lay with the team he had supported since his childhood.
Fast forward to year 2011, yesterday it was revealed that Fernando Torres was subject of a 35 million pound bid by the English champions Chelsea and that Liverpool had rejected the bid altogether. Just after a few hours of the news, further reports surfaced
suggesting that Fernando Torres had apparently requested Liverpool to reconsider Chelsea’s offer, signalling his interest in a possible departure from the Merseyside club.
Liverpool fans have previously taken great pride in Fernando Torres’s loyalty; he has even a Liverpool crest tattooed on his shoulder. The latest news that emerged from Liverpool’s press release confirmed that the club itself rejected Fernando Torres’s transfer
request which came in after http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786’s bid for the Spanish striker. The 26-year-old is in hot waters now with the Anfield faithful, as it remains to be seen how they will react to the news of their beloved “El Nino” turning his back on the club. Liverpool finished
7th last season in the Premier League and thus failed to secure a place in the 2010-2011 version of the UEFA Champions League.
In the summer, Fernando Torres won the 2010 FIFA World Cup with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/South-Africa-c757 was abysmal to say the least. The Spanish goal scorer has also been termed fragile by some experts due to his fitness
issues. Nonetheless, Liverpool confirmed through a press statement that they had rejected the Spanish striker’s request to leave the club.
The club statement read, “Fernando Torres tonight (January 28, 2011) submitted a written transfer request, which has been rejected by Liverpool. Fernando is under long-term contract and the club expects him to honour the commitment he made to Liverpool FC
and its supporters when he signed the agreement.”
Yesterday was by no means a gloomy day for Liverpool as a football club but it was converted into a disappointing one by their star striker’s transfer request, which came in just hours after the club revealed that they had signed Luis Suarez from the Dutch
football giants, Ajax Amsterdam. Suarez has been brought in to partner Torres in attack but the latter is already seeking a future which lies beyond Anfield’s hallowed turf.
Thus tremendous confusion has now been created at http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809; King Kenny now faces a huge task in convincing his enigmatic forward to trust in Liverpool. The club might have stopped their move for the January transfer window but will they do the same when
potential suitors come calling in the summer transfer window later on in the year? Only time will tell…
It’s all up for grabs now as far as Torres is concerned but rivals will not forget this incident even if the natives do. Thus, one can expect the terraces to ring with a new chant this time “He kisses the badge on his chest and then hands in a transfer request,
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707, Torres.”
