Football update: Premier league news – Part 5
Wigan Athletic
Current Sunderland captain, Lee Cattermole will be returning to Wigan for the first time this weekend. The player still holds a lot of respect for his former employers. Lee joined Wigan back in 2008 from his home town club, Middlesbrough, for a fee of 3.5 million pounds. Cattermole had a good time with the then Wigan coach Steve Bruce, and developed as an impressive player under the manager. Bruce, however, left Wigan to link up with Sunderland but has splashed a lot of cash to regain the midfielder’s services at the Stadium of Light.
“I have not been back there yet, but Wigan was a great club for me. They were a great stepping stone in between Middlesbrough and here. Everyone at the club was brilliant, from the chairman down. Obviously the manager and the staff came here. I loved my time there and I have a lot to respect them for.", claimed the former Middlesbrough midfielder.
In his one season stint with Wigan, the player made a total of 35 appearances, before joining Sunderland last season to link up with manager and mentor, Steve Bruce.
Wolverhampton Wanderers
Wolves defender, Stephen Ward has managed to make some dying moment challenges to save his club this season. While playing against Everton, Ward managed to block off a clear 1-on-1 chance for Jermaine Beckford. Also, Ward managed to neutralize Newcastle United forward Wayne Routledge when they hosted the Magpies at home. It is hard to believe for some people that the current left back started his career as a striker. The Ireland International has revealed that he loves his new job, claiming that he gets the same amount of satisfaction from defending as compared to his goal scoring days when he featured as a striker. The player claimed that he loved closing down people even when he was full forward and never mistimed a tackle even in his forward playing days. The 25 year old confirmed that he never hesitated pulling back even when he was playing in the front. In his conclusion of the statement, the player was happy with the team’s overall defensively quality and claimed that his side looked very solid. The player warned that for Wolves to survive this season in the Premier League, they will have to keep on playing at the highest level.
