To be honest, it is all down to opinions of the general public and the way they were brought up!

My kids are born into into rugby union, even though I enjoy footie, if it came to choice, RU then Footie, then RL!

Try wikipedia.  It'll give you background information on both sports, then will compare and contrast the two.  They'll also have some links to websites for football & rugby.
