I need some advice. I am a sophomore football player. I'm a pretty athletic guy 6.1, 180 lbs. I play football for my high school football team. This is my seventh year of football. Every team I've been on, I've worked my hardest, and had a starting spot, sometimes even both ways. This year though, I toyed all summer long about if I wanted to play anymore. I signed up, but when I got on the field, I felt like I didn't want to be there. It wasn't even a really tough practice. I don't fell much desire to work hard. I don't think I could quit because two a days are coming up, and that would look really bad. Help me out, what should I do. I don't really care what people think, but I don't like to be though of as a wimp

  1. seems like uve lost your love for the game........

    guess ur careers OVA!

  2. if you don't want to play...DON'T.  Because if you are not into what is going on, you might get hurt by others who are giving their all.  Or worse yet you might get someone else hurt by your indifference towards the game.  If you don't feel you can give 100%, then don't do it.  See if the time away from the game will stir feelings of wanting to be out there again.

  3.   If you dont want to play, dont. If you play, you are really just wasting your time.

  4. Well, it's the sophomore stump...it happens to almost all football players. Sophomore year is the hardest year for individuals in their high school career mainly because it's still in the beginning, and the person is usually not the star/focal point of the team and looks ahead to all the work he has to do, and gets discouraged. This is common in HS football players, I know becaue I speak from experience (HS and collegiate level).

    Here's what I would advise:

1.) Discern whether or not you truly love football. This is a hard question to confront, but it must be addressed. Take time to sit back and just watch a football game as a fan, not a player. Things like that, and determine how much you love the game. If the answer is no you don't love the game, then don't play. There's no use in devoting yourself to something you dont love.

2.) If you can't decide whether you love the game, bull ahead through this season. After this season, you will see whether you love or hate it after putting yourself through a season of it. Often (and what happened to me) is I found a new level of intensity/motivation and new awareness of the game. I had hit rock bottom, and was able to pull myself out again, and became a better player because of it.

It's all up to you. Don't let what your coaches/teammates will think affect your decision. You have to power to change your own life. If you want my opinion, I encourage you to press yourself forward and see what type of person and player you become at season's end. But again, that's is only an opinion.

  5. losing love of things is all too common. don't be so hard on yourself. like you said you don't care what people think? i think if you stick with this for this year, you will teach yourself you are tougher than you think and you'll feel good inside. regardless, try and remember why you started playing, find ways to make it funner for yourself, and try and have a good time.

maybe you could give yourself a reward after practices? once a week? i know you won't feel better really feel all different after reading this but i say bottom line, lighten up on yourself. we're always our own worst critic. is there something else you'd rather be doing? hope you figure it out : o )

  6. Sounds like you lost the desire to play.  Now, there is going to be some discomfort in leaving.  My advice is to treat it like a band aid.  So get rid of it quickly, and as fast as possible.  Secondly, go talk to your coach and tell him in person.  As for being thought of as a wimp, think about what is best for you first, and what others think second in all things.  If not, you will be living your life for other people, and never for yourself.

    Best of luck.
