I had my first driving lesson today, starting off and shifting gears wasn't a problem. However i seemed to panic a little when having to stop at a junction. What should the correct footwork etc be at a junction. And what is the correct order of footwork etc if you have to apply handbrake whilst at a junction?

1. When there is no traffic and it's safe to go?

2. When it's not safe to go and you have to wait until road is clear?

  1. This is hard to explain; when you choose to stop, you just use the brake like you would in an automatic car.  during your decelleration, there's a time when it's the right time to step on the clutch.  That time is when the engine has slowed down to idling speed.  At that time, you step on the clutch.  Your braking foot is ignoring all this.  It is braking based on the road in front of you.

Everybody who drives a manual does this, but it's hard to explain in words.

When you stop, you will have one foot on the brake and one foot on the clutch.  It makes no difference whether there is traffic coming or not.

Getting the car moving, of course, is always comprised of the steps of putting the transmission in first gear, letting out the clutch, and giving it gas.

  2. Keep your left foot off the clutch, unless you're changing gears...I like to downshift when I am slowing down so that I am in the proper gear should I have to accelerate plus it also helps me to slow down...It is very hard to shift from 2nd to 1st while moving, so I always have to come to a complete stop at an intersection.

At an intersection, have the gearshift in 1st while stepping on the brake and clutch...(DO NOT APPLY PARKING BRAKE)...When it is safe to proceed, come off the brake and ease on the gas while letting out the clutch...This will take some practice until it becomes very smooth and an automatic reflex...Use extra caution when driving in bad weather such as rain and snow or on hilly terrain.

    All the best

  3. 10 people...10 differnt answers...look in the local drivers manual...thats what the tester will go by....Me???... to stop...1..brake...2.before slowing enough to judder i put in clutch and pop into nuetral...3 at stop i put in clutch and put in 1st gear taking foot off brake....4 im ready to go.......Some will say down shift through the gears while slowing but i dont unless i want to use engine to help me slow..
