Footy Heritage - Do we know when each state started playing Australian Rules Footy?

There are conflicting arguments as to when and who started playing footy.

I found:

Victoria - 1858 (150 years) is supposedly when footy originated.

but in South Australia - 1843 (165 years) the SANFL website claims footy was played in Adelaide before 1858.

Western Australia - 1868 (140 years) http://www.api-network.com/main/index.php?apply=reviews&webpage=api_reviews&flexedit=&flex_password=&menu_label=&menuID=homely&menubox=&Review=4975

NSW - came close in 1877, close but no cigar

  1. According to Wikipedia-The Free Online Encyclopedia, Australian Rules Football was first played in Melbourne, Victoria (1858). As for the other states I am unsure.

Nevertheless, I hope this helps you.

  2. I would say that the South Australian start date would be a typo, instead of 1843 more likely to be 1863. remember that Adelaide was founded in 1836.

  3. Australian Rules was first played in Tasmania in 1864.

  4. i will go with arsenal on that one the fact that it's a typo.

vic first reported match was Aug 7, 1858.

SA  was in the April of 1860, teams from Adelaide footy club played for 3 hrs.

    nsw-1880

    WA- may 8 1885 that's what i have here.

tas- first tassy team 19 years after Vic in 1875.

qld- Brisbane footy club formed 1866, the league 1879.

that's what i have come up with, from a book i have had for 25 years. listed below.

  5. Cmon!  We all know the AFL is just another way of saying VFL.  The Vics don't care when footy started anywhere else.
