For 12th time this season, Mickelson can overtake Woods
Tiger Woods has finished atop the World Golf Ranking for ten of the past 11 years, the only exception being 2004 when Vijay Singh finished the season in the number-one spot.
Phil Mickelson has been in the number-two spot for awhile now and, given Woods’ troubles on and off the golf course this past year, has had many opportunities this season to take over
Woods’ spot at the top.
The upcoming Tour Championship at East Lake Golf and Country Club in Atlanta, Georgia, will be his 12th opportunity of the year.
And this time, Woods won’t be able to fend him off having failed to qualify for the exclusive 30-man field.
So how can Mickelson become number-one in the world?
He needs to either win the event or finish no worse than a three-way tie for second.
Steve Stricker, ranked number-four in the world, has also had opportunities this year to take the number-one spot but cannot mathematically make it happen this week.
That leaves Mickelson, who recently revealed that he was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, as the only man capable of dethroning Woods. It will also be his last opportunity of the season,
as the Tour Championship is the season-ending event on the PGA Tour.
