I am planning on buying 2 pairs of speakers (6x9 and another size I don't remember) and tweeters. Do I need an amp or anything like that or just a wiring kit?

  1. that depends on how much power your stereo puts out, but i would say go with and amp, visit crutchfields learning section, tons of tutorials and info.

  2. Are you building a basic system for casual listening or a big system for loud listening? That is critically important.

If you are using a typical modern stereo with a front and rear output, each output needs to see a 4 or 8 ohm load. 4 ohms is typical in a vehicle.

You only need an amp if you desire more power.

If the 6x9s and the others are 2-way or 3-way speakers, they are all you need, you won't need additional tweeters, and they will be the required 4 ohms. In typical products, Infinity, MTX, and Polk sound about the best. Kenwood is surprisingly good. Pioneer is surprisingly middle of the road. Most others are not very good. I personally recommend the Infinity products. MB Quart component speakers are very good.

If you get good quality speakers, for a basic set up, no amp or additional tweeters or subwoofer will be required. Only when you get into the "heavier" stuff will you need those items. Most listening is done with about 1 to 2 Watts. But it's logarithmic, as it goes louder you need loads of power.

  3. depends on the wattage and ampage of your stereo unit. however, an amp would always help !

  4. are you buying component sets (sets that come with a set of doorspeakers and mated tweeters) or are you just buying individual pairs of coaxial speakers?  for normal coaxial speakers, you do not need an amp for them to work, and if they're low-end speakers, an amp could blow them. a component set is a more expensive setup that is made to be hooked to an amp and/or crossover. a crossover is a device that "filters" the frequency fed to each speaker. for instance, you can make sure that the tweeters only play the highest frequencies, the mids the mid-range frequencies, and so on, which not only helps your sound quality immensely, but also helps to make sure you dont blow a set of tweets or door speakers.
