I recently came back from a trip to Japan. Three before we landed at Narita, we encountered some very rough turbulence. This turbulence was the most roughest I have ever experienced !!! Then the turbulence got worser and a h**l of a lot more worser as we neared Japan. The plane was really shaking like crazy !!! Why is the turbulence so extreme when flying into Japan ???

  1. actually i have heard of severe turbulence around japan

and as far as i know its from lee waves from the mountains on japan i don't know the name of the mountain (a volcano i think) but its not uncommon i believe

(strong winds hitting a mountain cause it on the other side)

  2. Flying to Japan has nothing to do with severe turbulance. Can happen anywhere.

  3. Could be a number of factors. But weather could be the reason in this case. Certain cloud types generate alot 'harder' turbulence than others so it may be that. It may also be the aircraft encountering some clear air turbulence en-route as well. This is common around phenomena known as jet-streams which can be common over the pacific at certain times.

These are just a few of many factors. It is hard to pinpoint the eact cause as they may vary from different conditions.
