Question:

For Aussies, is Duty Free worth it?

It's been many years since I travelled overseas and the last time I did, Duty Free was very good.

But the rules have changed since then and I've been told that you don't save that much anymore.

Can anyone tell me if that's true?

I'm thinking diamonds, watches, cameras, mobile phones.

thanks

  1. The only sales tax we have now is GST so the most you'll save on most things duty free is 10% and just asking for a discount at Harvey Norman and places like that will usually get you a better than 10% discount.

Your best bet is to go shopping here in Australia and haggle the price down as far as you can go, and then claim the GST back at the airport. You must carry the article as hand luggage (or wear it) and simply present your tax invoice at the TRS (Tourist Refund Scheme) desk beyond the immigration gates for your GST refund. The item must be purchased within 30 days of your departure date. One of the good things about doing it this way is that you are allowed to use the item (e.g. a camera, watch or mobile phone) before you leave, so if it's faulty, you can have the problem rectified before you go away. You can also get the Wine Equalization Tax back on wine (14.5%) in the same manner. See the link below for all info.

Things with excise such as alcohol and cigarettes are usually still a bit better duty free.

  2. Personally, don't think it is worth while. You would do better at normal stores and have a greater choice.

  3. I personally think Duty free is not a bargain anymore.

Get more deals in your local stores such as WOW, The Good Guys, Harvey Norman etc.....   Even (most of) the wine is cheaper down at your local store for the same overseas brands. I'll buy cigs at duty free and that's it.

Can't say I've bought diamonds lately so can't comment on that.

  4. its not really worth it now as technology is so quick to update and there is always a sale on somewhere. I fly overseas once or twice a year but only ever get alcohol as its the only thign thats worth it. Makeup & perfumes are OK but you only save about 10%
