I am thinking of relocating to Boston area and have found a wonderful house in Jamaica Plains area near the Pond. If you have lived in Boston (not visited) please advise me what type of community this is? I am single, white, female however, very open to diverse communities. More concerned with quality of life and safety issues- Thanks!

  1. Mike R is right on.  Jamaica Plain (though not the area near the pond) is also a chosen neighborhood of many L*****n couples, many with children.  That should suggest to you not only its diversity but its lifestyle environment.

  2. Also, you can start to localize yourself by calling it simply "JP".

  3. Jamaica Plain (no 's') or JP is an okay area - it's kind of a diverse, artsy area. It's pretty gentrified now. There are a bunch of co-ops, independently owned business, trendy restaurants, etc. There are parts of the neighborhood that are beautiful, but other parts that are pretty sketchy. Most of JP is somewhere in-between nice and sketchy, i.e. if you're smart and safe, you'll be fine.

It's probably nice, but I would definitely advise taking a trip to see the street and the house for yourself.

  4. it is a very diverse community, They don't get much more diverse than JP

Some areas are nice and some are rough

  5. Jamaica Plain is a great area, especially the area around Jamaica Pond.  It's near the T (subway) and it's also got lots of excellent restaurants and bars and stores, etc... and it's safe.  Plus the pond and parks around there are wonderful.  (FYI the neighborhood is Jamaica Plain.... not plural).  It's also fairly safe so I would have no issues with moving there.

  6. It's a great area.  Lots of cool funky stores in the downtown area, which is walkable from where you'll live.

There are a few not great areas, but they're not next to you.

  7. It's certainly safe, and around the pond it's very nice, pretty area. You'll find some fun shops, restaurants, etc. The only downside I could see, is the traffic, which tends to be pretty bad in that area. But really, you can find back roads and you'll be fine. Best of luck with your new home!
