Question:

(For Catholics) Will God not listen to your prayers if you have a mortal sin on your soul?

I've been wondering this because I've been praying for someone for like the last few days or so, but then I started to wonder, "What if God refuses to listen to me because of my possible mortal sin?" I've been to embarrassed to go to confession, and I can't go to communion anymore because I don't know if what I did is a mortal sin or not. Is it necessary for me to go to confession for God to listen to my prayers?

  1. Well, the Bible says otherwise.... especially in Isaiah 66 at the beginning

  2. Well my friend, a sin, whether it is mortal or not, is best left at the foot of the Cross. This is what confession allows us to do. To go and unburden ourselves. To give it to Jesus and say forgive me and free me from this!

He is waiting for you there to give you  your absolution. To say "your sins are forgiven, go in peace"! Don't hesitate. Nothing is too big for God to forgive and trust me priests have heard it all- in case that that's what your concerned about.

In regards to your question to be in mortal sin- as opposed to venial sin- is to lose the grace of God (venial sins diminish it in us, but mortal sins extinguish it in us completely). Make your peace with God  so that you can once again receive all the graces He bestows on us daily, especially the graces we receive in Holy Communion.

Having said that, God would not deprive a person of something because YOU are in mortal sin.

    God bless

  3. If you don't know if your sin was mortal or not, the best thing to do is go to confession and ask the priest.  He can tell you if it is or isn't, and then give you the grace of absolution.  Never be afraid to go to Confession.  Next to the Eucharist, it is one of our most cherished sacraments.  Use it often.

    God bless.

  4. <<(For Catholics) Will God not listen to your prayers if you have a mortal sin on your soul?>>

God always listens. If Gos chose to ignore prayer from those with mortal sins on their souls, that would mean God was unwilling to forgive sinners. The fact we know God is always willing to forgive mortal sins means God chooses to hear the prayers of those in a state of mortal sin.

<<I've been wondering this because I've been praying for someone for like the last few days or so, but then I started to wonder, "What if God refuses to listen to me because of my possible mortal sin?">>

    God always listens.

Wouldn't you like to know for sure? It may very well be possible you are not in a state of mortal sin and are unnecessarily missing out on Communion. Go to Confession, don't be embarassed, be forgiven. This way, you'll KNOW you're forgiven and won't have to worry about possibly defiling the Eucharist.

Let's face it, spiritually you are not doing yourself any favors by avoiding Confession.

<<Is it necessary for me to go to confession for God to listen to my prayers?>>

Yes. If it was not necessary, Jesus would not have bothered to institute the Holy Sacraement of Reconciliation.

  5. God listens to All Prayers.

  6. God sees through our hearts. If you have been praying for someone, it seems to indicate you still need God in your life.  Do not be afraid to approach him who said, 'Come to me, all of you who are heavily burdened... and I will refresh you."  Remeber David was burdened with mortal sin because of his relationship with Bathsheba, expressed in psalm 129 where he said, " If you , O Lord, mark my iniquities, Lord, who can stand? But with you is forgivenesss...: Asking forgiveness requires some form of humility, and by our Sacrament of Reconciliation where you are made to confess your sins to the priest - a fellow human being except through his ministry, we are provided with a simple opportunity to express humility.  Just remember, God's love is far greater than the weight of all our sins put together.  Be assured God hears your prayers, too.  Be happy in the Lord.

  7. Mother Teresa went to confession daily.

The "Sacrement of reconcilliation" is a grace.  It helps us avoid tempation.  The old testament had us examine our concience based off the 10 Comandments.  Jesus asks us to go further by following His example layed out in the Beautitudes.  Not only does Jesus want us to stay away from mortal sin, but he wants us to reach for the brass ring of being sainly by confessing what we "Fail to do".

In short, go to confession ... practice ... and strive to be the best you can for our Lord Jesus Christ.

  8. It's unfortunate to hear that you think you have a sin that is so terrible that God cannot bridge the gap between you.

Look at Romans 8 ... especially the beginning and the end.  If you have accepted Christ * NOTHING * can separate you from His love.

Satan will use any tactic at all to keep you from running back to God, including giving you feelings of unworthiness.   God is ready and waiting to hear from you, no matter what sins are on your heart.  As far as He is concerned, you are still part of His family.

Christ's death already paid for those, dude.   God is there, waiting for you.

  9. You must know that something is a mortal sin for it to be mortally sinful.

Yes, God hears the prayers of a person who is in a state of mortal sin, but they will not be as strong as if that person were in a state of sanctifying grace.  Also, one in a state of mortal sin cannot accumulate heavenly merit for prayers said.

    God bless!

  11. God always listens.

Don't be embarrassed to go to confession! I didn't go for 20+ years, and when I finally did, and unburdened myself, what peace and joy I found. Do go!
