If you were in a Filipino club in college, and a white guy joined, what would you think of that? Whether it be positive or negative. Thanks in advance.

  1. Its pointless, unless you speak the language or understand the dialect as well. Otherwise you be sitting there with a silly smile on your face wondering the whole time what they talking about. It not a simple case of asking them to speak in english. Even in meetings or seminars don't expect them to be very happy if you are the minority and you don't no the language and wanting to hear it in english as it wont happen. The polite thing is to ask for it to be translated by a friend or partner. sitting with you.

  2. a good one that is. why should that guy be interested in your club. he finds it interesting.

  3. Here's the reality from what I have observed.

It would be uncomfortable for some of the pinoys in that club for an outsider caucasian to be made a member. In such cases, the pinoy members consider the club as a sanctuary from the rest of the local society's homogenous, politically correct stance, so any infringement on it from the outside will be resented--albeit subtly and beneath the surface.

It's not really racial in nature but it is clearly cultural.  The pinoys would feel that they have to "act white" and converse in english with this guy/girl in their vicinity and that would defeat the purpose, in their minds, of one of the club's tenets--which is to preserve the heritage by practicing it constantly at every few opportunity where it presents itself.

In the case of another ethnic group other than white joining the club, that's when the real bigotry and elitism flares up--especially if the person in question is hispanic or black. That's another topic altogether.

  4. he finds it interesting and he probably wants to learn more about the Filipino culture...

  5. We'll give that person a warm welcome.. It means that person really find interesting of our club.

  6. +

  7. Actually, my brother's in the Filipino Association at his college and there is one white guy in it...and he's one for the top people there (almost at VP...I forgot what though).

I think that would be positive. It means that outsiders are willing to learn our culture and traditions. The Filipino culture isn't one that is highlighted very much in America like other cultures are. This would be a positive step for recognition as a huge population in America.

  8. I would not want to join a filipino club anyway. You put filipino's together, nothing good come out of it.

Why don't we just learn from the bible and just love people?

    Keep it simple.

  9. Well, to be honest most Pinoy associations are racially biased, and foster interracial tensions.

Sometims Filipino's tolerate caucasians in a Filipino association, but often such membership tests their extreme prejudices.

In parties some Filipino's think the white guy (we'll use that example) is simply looking for a Pinay, and othertimes they figure he is just trying to be friendly.  But it all depends.

However, I find Filipino's in US Universitites are often times born in the US and many have never been to PI.  So the ideaof a Filipino club is sort of as a means of socializing with other Filipino's, but the problem is that  Filipino would be insulted if the "White students" opened up a "White's only" club where they could feel free from the pressures of interacting with politically correct, hyper sensititve members of non white groups.  (I used that as an example, I don't actually feel that way but read the comment below by wonder woMan, and felt it necessary to show the hyprocrisy of his claims).

  10. if that white guy knows our filipino culture and respects our country then lets welcome him!

there should be no discrimination  =p

    peace ^_^

  11. most collegiate clubs have open membership.  a filipino club should accept anyone showing strong interest in anything filipino.
