For Semper Fi

In the Oasis

by Elaine P

He stood upon the Edge,

gathered crowds around Him

pointed to the fig tree,

gazed upon the mass.

Hear My words and hearken,

the fruit is ripe for picking,

is this crop your last one?

how long can Earth bear pain?

Cease your toxic ways,

learn to love your neighbor,

stretch to see beyond you

lest the darkness fall.

The people listened closely,

but did not heed His sermon,

as Midnight comes to meet us,

Earth sings a final dirge.

  1. A month or so ago, you wrote:

    "I want to

    write a poem

    that will live

    until our species

    can voyage

    through the galaxy

    in

    a

    real

    ship..."

I think this is the poem. This poem is scary in the truth I believe it holds. How long can Earth bear pain? I fear the answer.

  9. This is so powerful that I am stunned.  The tragedy is that there is a deep truth in your words, we as a whole have been toxic to Earth, wrapped up in ourselves, and lacking in compassion. The darkness is falling, and we must all live in harmony with ourselves, other people and the Earth if we have a hope of saving our planet, before "Earth sings a final dirge."  This is pensive and eloquent.  Thank you.
