I own a Toyota Corolla, and I'm wondering how much the PSI is, and how people calculate it. The car tire says the tire pressure is 35lb. What exactly is the difference between lb's and the PSI? best answer gets 10 points, please help guys!

  1. psi is PER SQUARE INCH the pressure 35lb is psi a tire gage only reads psi

  2. 35 psi is a little on the high end for tire pressure.  Would recommend going with 32 psi.  Remember that the manufacturer sometimes recommends things to reduce maintenance costs (longer times between oil changes for example) or improve mileage (higher tire pressure or using 5W20 motor oil), that ultimately do not benefit the long term life of the car (or in this case the tire)

PSI vs Pounds, think of it this way - if I took a 35 pound weight and placed it on your stomach it wouldn't hurt that much, but if I put a 35 pound weight inside a spike heeled shoe and placed it on you it would hurt a lot.  PSI is a measure of force per area, whereas pounds is a measure of weight.

  3. psi means pounds per square inch. take a pocket guage and put it on the valve stem and push on it, when it pops out, read it, if the tire is cold, it should read 35 pounds.

  4. lb is the abbr. of pound. this is from latin words libra balance think in terms of astrology.PSI is the correct term due to dealing with pressure contained in a vessel. PSI is abbr. for Pounds Square Inch. The tire situation is, 35psi is the most pressure that should be in the tire to inflate cold. Manufacturer suggested pressure will be in your owners manual or on a label located on the car. This label indicates the tire pressure the manufacturer used to test this vehicle for its ratings. You can run the pressure in the tires at 30 psi or 35psi cold.Be it known that when they get hot the pressure will rise slightly usally around 10 percent. so a cold tire pressure at 30 psi will become a hot pressure of 33 psi.

  5. PSI is pounds per square inch.  They will just say pounds for short.  So PSI and pounds are the same.  Usually the tire is marked with the maximum pressure.  See your manual for recommended inflation.  You will inflate more for heavy loads.  When I had a Corolla I inflated to 32 pounds.

  6. PSI = Pounds per Square Inch, often just shorted to "pounds" for the sake of simplicity.  So its all one and the same.

Going back 10 years in by Bennet Garfield Tire Guide and Bridgestone Firestone Tire Resource Manual I find that 30 psi front and rear is the inflation pressure Toyota recommends for all Corolla models.  35 psi would be overinflating the tires which reduces ride quality, increases wear, reduces traction, reduces stopping ability and makes the tire more susceptible to impact damage.

On a Toyota the correct inflation pressure for your year and model should be listed on the Vehicle Information Tag inside the drivers door frame.

  7. I think the 35lb is the PSI. PSI is the pressure per square inch. Which in the case of your car it would be 35 pound of pressure per square inch.

  8. Get a tire-pressure gauge, read the sticker on the driver's door jamb, and inflate the tires to the manufacturer's recommended tire pressure.

  9. It should say on the door what PSI to set it at.  And then you just get a tire-gauge and set it to what the door says...
