For a country that gives the misleading impression on child safety?

has me thinking there really isn't a "safety anything".

Snowing outside and white out conditions, but they still have school and when they consider letting them out earlier they wait until its really late and then maybe they'd let them out. Then they make the bus drivers (me) have to risk my safety and the safety of my students still be picked up and on time and they call because we're late?? Is there a moron running public school systems? They have no care for the children and the head probably get bonuses for having a successful year without a snow day off or any reason to call off school. Money issue? maybe? power issue? maybe? Nonsense, very! I am tired of the same old same old. And I wanted to vent so I am. How do you feel about it? Do you think schools and cities are risking youth to keep the intended amount of school days open at all costs? As a bus driver I say this, if it takes me 4 hours to get there is it not the time that is the issue, its getting them home safely?

  1. Had to drive 36 miles in blizzard conditions getting home from college once. I asked why they waited so long before closing the campus (if I could have left an hour earlier, I would not have had any trouble) and I was told that the only persons able to make that call were in a meeting in a room with no windows so they were not aware of the outside conditions. No body in the office was smart enough to go in and tell them it was snowing?

I realize that we can't always go by the weatherman's report but we should be able to trust our own eyes and when it starts to snow and the roads are getting bad, start closing stuff down.

I don't have any kids in school any more but I will still thank you for transporting your riders to and from school safely and for being concerned for their safety. Kudos to you. Be safe.

  2. You are absolutely right!!!! The safety of the children is THE most important thing. But at the same time they want the kids in school as much as possible. I was always under the assumption that if the roads are passable, the school buses should be able to get around but if the plows have not passed most of the secondary roads, then the buses should leave earlier just to get the kids home safe.

I don't know what state you are from, but I am originally from NY, Hudson Valley. They close schools at the drop of a hat. But if the area is prone to snow, it will wait. I don't know. I still side with you.  Good luck! You are fighting a losing battle, I'm afraid.

  3. Well, you do have a point there.

But you should see it from their point of view.

They have to have them in school for a certain number of days. If not, they have to change the entire schedule and keep them in school longer. They don't like to change schedules because it means changing everything.

But, you have a point. It is dangerous.
