  2. The phones normally only use two wires.  So the two inside ones are used for line 1 or a single line.  The jacks are 4 pin and can handle 2 lines.  The two outside wires are for line 2 of a two line system.  Assuming a home system.

    Actual color from the incoming wiring can be different.  It all depends on what wires were used in the first place.  I had a house where the upstairs was wired different colors from the basement.  So line 1 was red yellow up stairs and green black downstairs.  So when adding in line 2 just used the other colors for up and down accordingly.

    For an actual color scheme there should be one but I haven't seen one that was consistant.  Either they did it differently over time or the installers have been lazy.  So I always go to the incoming wire block and see what colors were used inside and wire accordingly for all 4 pins.  It only takes a few seconds to check it and then you know how your house was wired.
