  1. Five did a good job of explaining resolution regarding HD TV.  But that being said; resolution is not the whole sum of a HD picture.  There are other technologies that influence how a picture displays and the quality that can mean almost as much as the resolution.

Take a Panasonic 720p plasma vs most of the 1080p sets.  Because of the "other" technologies built into the Panasonic, the picture will be as good if not better than other manufacturers sets.  Contrast ratio is one of those technologies.  The higher the contrast ratio, the more shades of each individual color a set is able to reproduce.  We're talking "native" not "dynamic".  Dynamic resolution compares real well with digital zoom; both processes are a computer enhancement and we're all seen photos that the taker got digital zoom happy on.  Yep, those over pixelized, not very clear ones.

Best advice, don't get too hung up on the numbers, pick the set that pleases your eye the most.  You want white whites, dark true blacks that have texture and good clean lines on the objects displayed for starters.  If budget is a concern, look at the Panasonic 720p, it delivers a great picture and performance with a much more budget friendly price than 1080p.

  2. TV isn't measured in pixels per inch rather lines of resolution.  There's two resolutions for HDTV.  720 horizontal lines of resolution and 1080 lines of resolution.  The 1080 can either be interlaced or progressive.  Interlace means the image is drawn on the screen in alternating lines.  Progressive means the images is drawn in one continuous pass.  So regardless of the size of the screen, all TV advertised as 1080 lines of resolution will have the same number of pixels.  1080 will give you a better resolution than 720.
