  1. For standard telephony, you will need a minimum of AWG 26 gauge copper; twisted pair.  The number of twists-per-inch is not critical (1 twist per foot is sufficient).  

    If you can afford 24 or 22 gauge wire, that would be better.

    Shielded-twisted pair is unnecessary
