  1. In my opinion Yes -  expanding the EU in to the middle east and in to Africa would be a nonsense and lead to the demise of the EU in my opinion.

The French President Nicolas Sarkozy reaffirmed last month his opposition to Turkey joining the European Union and said he would order a referendum on Turkish membership if necessary.

Other EU countries are also dubious about Turkey joining and to be honest I can't see the new more right administration now in place in countries such as Italy or indeed many new Eastern Block members of the EU welcoming Turkish membership.

As for beyond Turkey, Morocco's bid to join the EU has already been rejected, as it is not within the EU and this has set a precedent.

There is already an African Union and there are other Unions developing throughout the world.

  2. For a simple question here's a simple answer:

  3. I wouldn't say that it's essential, we may consider an application from the USA?

  4. We have already reached the borders of Asia with the expansion eastwards and as there has long been a loose link with certain overseas territories, it is not inconceivable that there could be an enlargement beyond the European confines. http://aei.pitt.edu/4279/ There is, too, the strange position of France, which has constituent parts flung all over the world -- eg. Reunion Island, Martinique, Guadeloupe, which are officially part of Metropolitan France.

  5. It does not, Turkey is working on it. Though they're a bit selective, as they shot down Morocco, earlier.

  6. Turkey is a borderline case (literally) but no country from say South america has tried to apply

even countries in Europe have to apply and pass a lot of tests of suitability to be admitted.

  7. You would think so, but there is no mandate that states such...that I know of.
