I cant decide between the Remington model 700, VTR, SPS Varmint, or the R-15. Does anyone have a preference of these guns? I want to get a new varmint gun chambered in .223 and that is what i have narrowed it down to.

R-15 http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/Model_R-15_VTR.asp

Price is not an issue here.

  1. R-15 for sure, its quick firing and very accurate

  2. If you are skilled what are you skilled at shooting with this gun?!*

  3. I own an Armalite Ar15-T, and an Ar-10 T.

Both of these guns shoot as well as a bolt. A bit pricey, but I like the second shot capability.

Look into Armalite's products if you decide to go with an auto. Also, I have read gread reviews about Rugers new sub-moa mini 14.

If I were to buy a varminter rifle, and It was not the Armalite, I would get a Thompson. Its one gun, that can be as many calibers you want it to be, and is an accurate well respected firearm.

  4. The reports I have read seem to state the R-15 does not have a really good trigger, as pull and creep make it a little tough to produce really good groups.

But none the less it is a nice rifle.

The VTR would by my choice in the three rifles you have selected.

I like a 24" barrel length some what better than the 22" the VTR has though.

The SPS would be a nice bench rifle but really is to long and heavy to carry if one is hunting Coyotes where walking and calling requires the piece to be carried in and out of a car or truck.

Also the 17 cal. rounds never require a heavy barrel to shoot well, as in a 17 cal. they are plenty stiff with out the extra thickness a heavy barrel offers.

  5. Honesly, you can't go wrong with an AR style rifle. The flexibility of the rifle can't be beat. If you decide to spruce up your new rifle to fit your needs, there are a million and one other parts available.

Not trying to discount your shooting ability, but a ready-to-go follow up shot is always a plus.

  6. from everything i've read about the r-15 it seems great, but them again all i've read is from propaganda from remington and from press junkets paid for by remington.

That being said, i do want a r-15, they look cool, and seem great. from everything I've read. Face it, for 500 yard shots, a semi is better than a bolt!!!! I make them frequently with a Bushmaster AR15 carbine , and that 2nd shot means all the difference in the world!

  7. I already have a few AR-15s, one set up for varmint hunting.  I would have to vote for the 700 VTR, it looks cool with that triangle barrel configuration.

  8. I don't even see why there's a question. The SPS is the varminter in the bunch, the others having those military look-alike features for those who want such things. And really, a muzzle brake on a 223? What's that about?
