For a ten year old which is best a Premium version or a home basic version of vista? ps whats the difference ?

Quite honestly for a child of that age the operating system doesn't matter that much. What matters mostly is the RAM because no doubt there will be a lot of downloading of games and music and playing, nothing too serious, so it is silly to spend too much money as children always want the updates when they arrive and so just get basic and not the highest spec out. But whatever you decide on, do ensure you get a parental control program so that access to unsuitable websites is not possible.

on that kind of laptop premium will struggle, however they are very similar, premium comes with the glass effect, and windows media centre, and a few other goodies, basic is like xp, but with the vista look and feel, and the desktop search, and dx10, however you wont be using that not on that comp, a 10 year old probs wont notice the difference, however i'd go with premium so you have it all.
