I am planning a trip to Italy for about 2 weeks, 14 days total. Is spending 4 days each in Rome, Florence, and Venice, with the remaining 2 days in Cinque de Terre a good pace? I'm trying to avoid getting bored, but also want some time to relax (and not be rushing to the train station all the time!)

you can review what i recommend you in doing while in florence, the extra towns aroudn it and so on...

    have a safe trip!

  2. I think that you should spend the most time in Rome but don't forget the side cities! Outside of Florence, there's Pisa, Siena, Fiesole, and Lucca. Venice is fun and pretty but extremely touristy and Venetians seem to have a short temper when it comes to tourists. You didn't mention Milian. I didn't like Milian much but I think you should still give it some time. I haven't been to Cinque Terre but I heard it's exhausting, like running a marathon. And finally, only an hour from Milian is Lugano, Switzerland, an absolutely magical place! Definitely check it out--the exchange rate is in your favor, too!

  3. are you going to miss out the famous leaning town in Pisa? it's only an hour from florence and it's really worth it .4 days in florence are too many in my opinion. on the way to florence from rome you could stop to perugia or assisi which are very nice as well as siena. 4 days in venice are definitely too many. in two weeks you could see a lot of italy.

  4. 4 days are good for Rome, because there is plenty to see, i agree with who told you to go to Pompei: it's gorgeous! of course if you like antique ruins :)

4 days in Venice are way too many! believe me, in one or two days (if you don't want to rush) you can see everything!

i leave 45 minutes of train from Venice, so i know!

if you go to Florence, probably 2 or 3 days are good and you can go visit the leaning tower of Pisa, which is not too far from there, but don't plan on staying in Pisa! except for the tower and the "campo dei miracoli" around it, there's nothing else interesting....

Assisi is a beautiful place to go to and also Siena (always in the sorroundings) is worth it...

The cinque terre are gorgeous! there is a lot to walk, but you can also relax a little bit at the beach if you go during the summer!

If you go to Venice, you can stop by Verona (roughly one hour of train), it's a small town where you can see the major things in one day, but it's cool: it's mostly famous for Romeo and Juliet's balcony and for the Arena!

    well, enjoy Italy!!

  5. I've spent much time in Italy and in all the places you mention.  I think 4 days is plenty of time in each place.  But I agree with other respondent.  You should take little sidetrips to places like Siena, Pisa, and Assisi which are near Florence.  And you might even take a day or two from Rome down to Pompeii and Capri.  Wherever you go and whatever you do in Italy will be delightful.  Buon fortuna!

  6. I tend to get tired of big, touristy cities really quickly so I always try to get out into the country a bit.  From Florence you could easily rent a car (or take a bus or train) into the gorgeous Tuscan countryside.  What a tragedy if you missed seeing this area!  I happened to be in Florence on a holiday weekend (May 1, I think) and you honestly couldn't walk down the streets because there were so many people.  I was getting bumped into and knocked around all the time, so we decided to head out to San Gimiano (sp?) and then stayed on this amazing farm/inn in Cecina (tiny town).  We ended up staying over a week because it was so gorgeous, relaxing, and wonderful after the busy city!  We also ended up staying more than a week in Cinque Terre.  What a beautiful area!  If you like hiking I strongly recommend hiking the trails between the five towns.  Some can be a bit challenging, but what incredible scenery!  Also, just sitting on the beach and enjoying the Mediterranean waters can be a very lovely vacation in and of itself.  Whatever you do don't ruin your vacation by rushing yourself too much!  I've always found slow travel to be the best type.  Enjoy your trip!

  7. Well i have been to italy plenty of times and i love it. If you are going to go for 4 days each place you might want to maybe give a different amount of days in different places. Like you said that you don't want to be rushed to the train station all the time, you might want to stay longer in a area where there is a beach (if you are a beach kind of person) or somewhere you probably think you would enjoy more. But if its your first time and you feel that you would want to see each place for the same amount of days thats fine. It just depends on what you like to do. Also when you go to those main cities, one day you might want to take a day trip to outside of the major city to small towns. All you need is a rental car or taxi to get there and you can ask your hotel concierge how to get there.
