Question:

For all Current Claims Examiners?

I currently work for an Auto Lienholder in the Insurance department. I'm very interested in becoming a claims adjuster for personal lines with an insurance company. I've started looking into getting a license for the State of Texas, but my main concern is that I make over $45 a year in my current position (leadership role) - would I be taking a huge pay cut starting out as an adjuster on the bottom rung?

  1. Yep.

Starting salary for no experience tends to run in the 30 - low 30's range.

But that's going to happen any time you change careers into a field where you have no experience. I've been an adjuster for 12 years -- I could not go to work for a lien holder making the same money you are now. I'd have to start on the bottom rung and take a huge paycut.

  2. If you have the desire to become a claims adjuster, you should consider becoming an Independent.  My first year as an IA netted 62K with no travel and no storm chasing.  If your thinking about a staff adjuster then the wages are a lot lower. Oh by the way this is in Texas.
