  1. My guess would be for you to be looking for something in the $2,000 to $2500 range. It will be cost effective for you just starting out and you should be able top find something fairly reliable in that range. No need to spend much more for your first car. Keep in mind how much you will be driving though. How far away from home will you be? How often will you return home? Remember it is both ways. Look for something gas worthy . something like a Honda accord is good . They run forever and get good mileage. Find a mechanic before you buy. Get comfortable with him. If he won't spend sometime to talk to you then he probably isn't the one you need. Tell him you will be bringing it there for him to take care of it. Ask him what he thinks is good. I have owned a shop and some mechanics will charge accordingly as to the difficulty of the car they are working on.

    Good Luck!!!!

  2. for $4,000

    look for

98 Acura CL, 98 Ford Mustang V6, 98 Honda Accord or Civic, 98 Nissan Frontier or Pathfinder, 98 Subaru Impreza or Legacy, 98 -00 Toyota Corolla or Echo 00

these are all reliable and will last longer than other cars in this price range.

for around $6k an Acura Integra 98-99 is a great car.

  3. Its all about how much money you have to spend, so your direct questions of "good amount" to spend is: "as much as you can afford", and "miles driven" would be: as few as possible considering how much you can afford.

So step 1, define how much you want to spend on a car.

Step 2, go to traderonline.com and type in that amount and see what cars come up.

Step 3, narrow down your search to a couple models that will best suit you.

Your going to college and don't have a lot of money, so you will probably be looking for a small compact car (good gas mileage) with as few miles on it as possible.

So, Step 4 is, click on the part where it lines cars up with lowest mileage first, and start seriously looking at the lower mileage cars from your search.

The very general rule is, the less miles a car has on it the more you will be able to get out of it, giving you the best bang for your buck.

Things to avoid at all cost when looking for a used car are performance enhancements and styling enhancements installed by the owner.  This generally will result in a car that has been "ragged out" or used harshly and is now attempting to be sold off to get a new toy to rag out.

Also, when your searching for cars on the internet, try to narrow your search for cars close to you.  You really need to go and drive a used car before you purchase it.  If you don't know much about cars and your a female, get an older wise guy you trust (father, uncle, brother) to come with you and check out the car.

Buying a used car can get you a GREAT deal, you just have to put in the time to do the research, and then put in more time to do a lot of leg work.

Don't buy the first car you see and don't buy based on emotions like "its a cute car".

Drag the guy to several cars and pick out the best one of the bunch.

  4. Should find something for $5-6,000 with no more the 50,000 to 60,000 miles
