For all those who lived a life... Please help me out!?

I am 21. Totally confused. Will complete Mechanical Engineering this year. I like computers a lot because things keep changing and I like changes.

I like to travel, to meet new people. I love hearing to music a lot. I tend to appreciate arts (paintings) more than my peers.

I have done exceedingly well in Computer Science papers in School and college.

I am not good in remembering chemical equations... because I cannot associate "Sulphur", "Benzene" etc..to anything. There are so many such terms to understand. I just could not. But my friends were able to. (In class 11 and 12)

I like to make others happy. Make them smile, because that makes me happy too.. (hmm, me selfish)

My parents have a lot of hope on me. They want their son to be a "good-salaried employee" because of the relative security compared to business and artists.

I want to work hard, but dont know in what..

Please shed light on my confusion from your experience, your views, advices on where am i right and wrong

  1. You're about to get a degree in Mechanical Engineering.  I would suggest that after you get your degree, you find work in that field and see whether or not you like it.  You will probably get involved with Auto Cad and that should satisfy your interest in computers.  If not, you can continue your studies in the computer field.  No one can really tell you what to do.  Maybe you should take an aptitude test and see what the results are.  I'm guessing that you're a young guy and can always persue something other than Mechanical Engineering.  The thing is, you might actually enjoy the work.  I don't think that you should choose a field of work just because you can make alot of money in it.  You should do what you enjoy.  If you enjoy it, you will become good at it.  If you are good at what you do, you will be paid well for your efforts.  It is important that you enjoy the type of work that you do because you will be spending so much of your time at it.  You really don't want to work at something that you don't enjoy.  I have been in the work world for years.  Then, I went back to school and got a degree in art and I still don't know what I want to do.  I wish you luck. It's hard sometimes to find your way in the world but I think that it's healthy that you are questioning and searching.

  2. what you have said doesn't touch on right and wrong.

Consider what my mom said recently "I've wondered if I was right in letting you do whatever you wanted,"

    My reply was "Me, too."

You can't really know... there is no way to know. Try computer science? At 16, my sophomore year of college, I switched from cognitive science to the arts, and I suffer 20 years later for that choice.

    Or do I?

  3. Go to tickle.com. They have a lot of tests to help you find your interests and abilities. Also, it is helpful to know that different people have different learning styles. It helps to know what yours is, then you can translate what you're learning into that form. Don't compare yourself to others.

Trying to make others happy, by itself, isn't always a good thing, if your own happiness depends on that. Only you can decide which is more important, financial security or doing what you love. I'd go with the last one though, because I know lots of miserable people. Also, your parents can't live your life for you, and you can't live theirs for them.

Really, this is a time when you should try things out. People rarely stay in the same job or career for their whole lives anymore, and I think this is good. Good luck.

  4. Do what you're best at doing.  That seems logical enough.  When you excel at something, that right there is job security.  If you just settle for anything that you dont excel in, you cant guarantee job security no matter which field you're in.  The key to job security is setting yourself out from the crowd and being that one person your job needs.  Take time to think of what qualities you have that may be able to stick out like that and be better than others and pursue that.  In the end, what means the most to you?

A lot of people may have multiple interests.  I got a bachelor in neurobiology, working on master in business, teaching english at an elementary for current living, singer and model for side job, photography as hobby, love music and performing arts, love to dance and act, love kids and love to make people happy, love taking care of others and looking after people's health, interested in computers, used to do web designing.  But my ultimate goal is to be a brain surgeon.  That's such an off ball for all the other things I do but in the end, there's only one thing I care most about doing.

  5. What do you want to do? What do you love doing more than anything else in the world? Do that and the money will come.

  6. I think there is a little of wanting to please others in all of us!  It does make one feel good.  HOWEVER, your choice of career path 'must' be selfish.  You want to enjoy going to work, feel proud of your work, and enjoy the paycheck that goes with it.

Sit down w/your parents and be honest about their choice of career for you and what YOU want to do.  Of course parents want to see their child be a 'good salaried employee'!  It would help us sleep better at night.

Remembering equations is critical in pursuing a mechanical engineering degree.  It sounds as though that career choice, ultimately, will not satisfy you.
