  1. Hard truths:

A psych major is a dead end major.  I know plenty of Phds with psych degrees who are unemployed and fishing for jobs nationwide.  This is the most common major.  Be prepared to go to grad school in another field or maybe a school counselor or do something else when you graduate. My best friend was a psych major and is now an EMT and makes 9/hr.   You need to specialize and take all you science courses as soon as you get into college.  Most people with psych degrees often go unemployed or get low paying jobs.  Sorry but reality after colleges hurts.  My advice is to not graduate unless you have taken all your science classes and make sure you get a high gpa and letters of rec.  Be prepared to go to grad school.

  2. Thank you, Broke for sharing your opinion on a question no one posted.

I'm not a psych major (sorry), but I go to UT, and our psych department is great, for one reason-- research. No matter where you go, make sure they have a strong research following. This ensures that your professors are conducting and participating in the field in ways that are very relevant. This is important (and it's kinda cool to see your teachers in textbooks!).

Another general note about psychology: You should expect to go to a substantial amount of graduate school. A lot of people just jump in, thinking that they have an easy major. The thing about messing with people's minds is that we want people to be good at it-- so if all you're getting is a B.S, then there aren't many people in the industry who are going to care.

Additionally, I would advise you to specialize in areas that are small an fairly unnoticed in psychology, such as industrial psychology (check it out on collegeboard/myroad). The salary is impressive, and it will increase your chances of finding a job post-school.
