  1. from my own experience you can use one from a book or movie or other texts as long as you say im reading a monolouge from so and so and i'll be playing the part of so and so  in yr intro!! good luck!!!!

  2. If you're auditioning for a play, use something from a play.  That means go read some plays and find something you like, learn it, and perform it.  If you're auditioning for a movie they'll give you the lines they want you to read.

Most of the time it's not a good idea to write something of your own.

  3. The importance of an audition, beyond the fact that unless directed to, you should not assume to do anything from the production, but anything you present should be considered as You showing stage presence, even in a general sense.

One thing you might want to consider is that anyone casting any show, already knows who and what they want, in the sense of characterization. In that notion for you, knowing what you're auditioning for might Hint you to a piece to present, that might at least relate

  4. A lot of times it depends on what you're auditioning for, and who your director is.  Movie monologues can seem too cliche' sometimes.  To me, I think they can be great pieces of work, as well as ones you write on your own.  Whatever you pick, make sure it's got the complete beginning-middle-end, and you show a change to your character.
