Question:

For anyone who has read and remembers "Jane Eyre"?

Would you consider Burns to be a "foil" to Jane? ("Foil" - A character who is meant to represent characteristics, values, ideas, etc. which are directly and diametrically opposed to those of another character, usually the protagonist.)

  1. Yes, I would think so.  Helen is rather easy going about religion for those times, and relaxed about it all.  In some ways she is the opposite of Jane, and I think she is less worldly than Jane.

    It is more than half a lifetime since I read Jane Eyre, and I really cannot remember specific details of the novel other than very generally.  However, these sites should help you with your work with it.

  2. yes, because whereas he is mysterious and a dark figure, jane is a more honest and righteous character.

    best way to go is sparknotes or cliffsnotes online though... :D
