For applications to state and local police agencies, why doesn't military police experience count?

I know stations prefer military experience, what I mean is why doesn't MP experience count towards police experience, because there is always a little disclaimer on applications saying military police experience doesn't count.

  1. I'm not sure where you got the idea that it doesn't count.  Police agencies PREFER new officers to have military experience.

The actual job of Military Policeman doesn't apply because its not the same as Civilian policing.  However, if you are otherwise  qualified and were honorably discharged, you should have no problem getting the job.

  2. The "military" part does count, just not the "police" part since the laws and rules are different. You get points on a Civil Service exam for being a veteran. Your experience in the military police could be helpful but they will retrain you to their way of doing things.

  3. You'll get credit for your military service, but being an MP has nothing to do with being a police officer.

You've not had the training required for the state licensing requirements, you don't know the state or local laws.

If it is any help, military vets get preference over other applicants in 99% of all agencies.

    Good Luck
