For band auditions, what does it mean when they say one "lyrical excerpt" and one "technical excerpt"?

  1. technical would be playing like a guitar solo or making up a riff on the spot

    lyrical is when you play you instrument and sing along


  2. Basically the technical excerpt is a short section of music that shows off technique (i.e. speed, a variety tonguing, accuracy, range, etc).  This is the part that shows off your level of perfection (right notes, right time at the right dynamics with proper articulation)

    the Lyrical excerpt is meant to show off you ability to be musical.  This excerpt may be a little technically easier, but should be more expressive.  This is the artistic part.
