well seeing as the prefix BIO is in both words, i'd say they're similar... biology will probably be a prerequisite for the other advanced courses you'll take to get into biotechnology

biotechnology itself deals more with biochemistry, which again, has BIO in it

I'm not sure in what context you mean (education neccesary for a biotech career, maybe?), but no matter what, biology is an integral and indispensable part of everything in the biotech field.

Yes. and engineering probably. For college, i'm sure there is a very tailored track for biotech major. but basic biology is needed.

Hi, I've been working in biotech since I graduated as a Biology major 7 years ago.

The basics of biology are a definite must have to work in biotech; however, biology is not the best major for working in this industry. A Biology major would do better going into medical school, environmental work, or working directly with animals.

For biotech there are different areas of science to specialize in that will take you to different function of the industry. Biochemistry is a strong general background for biotech, it can get you into everything from alaytical chemistry to protein design. Molecular Biology will help you on the cloning and cell culture side, as well as some bio-assays/analytics. There is also engineering which is necessary for process purification.

So, you should decide soon which part of biotech you are interested in, and point yourself towards that area. If you want to do experimental cloning than you will need biology/molecular biology/ and biochemistry. If you want to choose which pharmaceutical candidates will be developed you will need an MD, which has a biology background. If you just want to work in the industry doing lab work, you will need at least basic biology.

Basically, leraning biology is just the first step in learning biotechnology.
