Question:

For brides who wore a drop-waist dress

The gown I'm in love with )and trying on tonight) has a drop-waist. I'm so worried that because I'm short (5'5) and have short legs, that it won't work for me. I plan on wearing 3-inch heels (I love in heels!) so that will help, but I was just wondering if there are any brides out there who tried on or wore a drop-waist dress and if it worked for you.

This is the dress:

  1. You're not short. I'm 5'6 and wearing a drop waist for my wedding next year and I'm not going to be wearing heels (though I live in them also). It's really not a big deal at all. You just need to decide what you think when you put the dress on and put on your heels.

  2. I think the bow under the bust will draw attention upward, so the drop waist won't be notices. I also think the fullness of the skirt will offset the "illusion" of short legs that can happen with drop waists.

    The dress is beautiful.  Congrats!

  3. I think the fact that the skirt portion of the dress is long and full, will offset the fact that the waist is dropped - it's not a traditional dropped waist, anyway- its' more elongated.

From all my reading over the years of body types and what works and what doesn't work, I've indeed read that typically (as in not including wedding dress style) a higher waistline will elongate the legs, a longer skirt will work for you also, to give the illusion of longer legs. A dropped waist on the other hand gives the illusion/accentuates a longer torso and shorter legs. But this is taking into consideration a regular dress.

A dress like the one in the link you posted, as in many wedding dresses already automatically gives the illusion of leg length because the hem is at the floor. And the way the bow and the top is designed, it really accentuates the length of the dress, even though the waist is dropped.

This waist line is not just one single line across the body- if it were then that would be more obvious.

Good luck and congrats on your wedding!

  4. You might need to shorten the bodice as part of the alterations so this dress doesn't make you look squatty.  You might find another dress entirely that is fabulous on you so try on everything the clerk suggests.

  5. that's a winner i love the dress and the heels will give you height so it be wonderful enjoy.

  6. Your not short!! you will be like 5'8 with those heels, thats tall! WITH my heels I will only be 5'3! And it is a beautiful dress, so I think it will look just fine

  7. You're not short ,i mean with the heals you're going to be 5 8 so you will look just fine.

    BTW, i love the dress!

  8. Short/Petite  brides should stay away from gowns that are "too much" meaning gowns with too much fabric that "swallow up the bride." Clean, unbroken contours without too much fabric tend to elongate. A-line or Princess A-line with natural waistlines gowns are great choices for petite brides. Big Ball gowns and mermaid wedding dress shapes can overwhelm and dropped waistlines tend to make short brides look shorter.
