For centuries people thought the moon was made of green cheese?

Then the astronauts found that the moon is really a big hard rock. Isn't that what happens to cheese when you leave it out too long?

Cheese that stays out too long gets eaten by bacteria and doesn't turn into rock. If it is isolated from bacteria, but air is still present, then it might be able to calcify but the moon is solid rock.

The moon is not made out of cheese. It's made out of rock from the young earth. Plus cheese will get all moldy and stink very bad.

Nobody seems to notice the disparity between "green cheese", and the actual color of the Moon.

Is it green?  No, it is not.  Then why would anyone ever suggest it is made of green cheese?  This is one of the great mysteries of life.
